A History of Sheffield synopsis

Sheffield has always been synonymous with knives and steel, and most of the previous books have recognized the enormous changes that manufacturing has brought to the region in the past 200 years. This was the period in which industrial handicrafts and industry were central to every aspect of life and work in the region.

The numbers are amazing: in the 17th century, three out of every five men in the town worked in one branch or another of the tableware trade. In all, Sheffield had blacksmiths for every 2.2 houses.

A hundred years later, there were up to six mills per mile on rivers such as Don, Porter and Rivelin, where he led a wide range of machines and industrial processes. Local innovations included the old Sheffield plate, steel crucible and stainless steel.

In the middle of the 19th century, 60 per cent of all British construction workers worked in the Sheffield area. The region produced 90 per cent of British steel and nearly half of all European production; small and specialized workshops produce a wide range of goods such as razors and tools Together with massive steel mills (estimated that in 1871 both Brown and Camel exported them to the United States three times more than all Americans).

However, as David Hee shows, the city dates back further. Occupies a leading position in Winnkopenk, high above the Don River, the essential remains of the Iron Age era, built to defend the local population.

The Celts, Vikings and Anglo-Saxons came and left a legacy mentioned in many local names. By the twelfth century, William de Loftot had built a castle at the junction of the Don and the Quay, and it was likely that he founded the city of Sheffield alongside his residence.

A century later, the first reference to the Sheffield maker can be found, so it can be said that the industry in the region is at least 700 years old and undoubtedly extends beyond that. Local historian David Hai has written a very respectable history of Sheffield. Its excellent text completes more than 300 illustrations, many of them in full color.

The text of this new edition has been updated to 2010, and contains new illustrations.
