Europe in the Classroom synopsis

This book presents an unconventional account of education reform after 1989 in Romania. By relying on policy documents, interviews with key players, qualitative data from everyday school contexts, and extensive textbook analysis, this pioneering study explores the change in the Roman education system as a process that establishes world culture through the symbolic mediation of the concept of Europe. The book argues that the structural and organizational evolution of the educational system over time is separated from its self-image through the service of the nation-building agenda. He does so in spite of the remarkable changes in the discourse that reflect an increasingly transnational definition of the school's post-1989 message.

The book also points out that the concepts of "nation" and "citizen" established by the school are gradually redefined as universal , Correspond to post-war patterns of post-national affiliation.
