The Sisters of the SpanishEmpire tell a remarkable story of a group of nuns who traveled around the world in the 17th century to establish the first Franciscan monastery in the Far East. In 1620, Sir Geronima de la Asunción (1556-1630) left the isolated monastery in Toledo, Spain, heading for Mexico to board a Manila plane en route to the Philippines.
Sur Geronima is familiar to art historians in its image by Velazquez attached to the Prado Museum in Madrid. What most people do not know is that one of her companions in traveling, "sur l'Anna Cristo" (1565-1636), wrote a long biography of George Soronema and dissolved it for fifteen months.
Drawing on the manuscript of Sur-Anna, other archival sources and rare books, Owens's study offers a fascinating view of travel, proselytizing and empire.
