Philanthropy in South Africa synopsis

The dominant accounts of African philanthropy are often portrayed as mere recipients of aid, usually Western Indians - who distribute charitable donations to destitute Africans. The contributors to this volume turn this argument upside down and ask: What about the spirit of the beneficiaries of the masses of Africans whose generosity keeps millions of their compatriots? This volume is unique in that it illuminates the search for philanthropy in Africa using case studies and ethnographic materials to examine a number of topics: reciprocity courses among black professionals, charitable work in social justice, community foundations, and Ubuntu subsidies in rural and rural areas.

Senior thinkers on the normative aspects of charitable work in Africa also critically explore theories, perspectives and research on philanthropy. This well-researched book will be a valuable resource for institutions, civil society organizations, researchers, policymakers, and students in South Africa.
