Richard Rolle synopsis

Yorkshire Richard Roll (1300-1349) was the first and greatest immediate influence of medieval English mysticism. His writings, including Latin, are still found in more than 400 manuscripts, especially in the fifteenth century.

His insistence on personal communication between the Creator and the Creator was to influence the development of pre-reform religious thought and his final choice of English as a means of expressing his teachings, while still a secondary language, reviving in modern language the tradition of colloquial prose. This is the first full-length edition of the major English Roll inscriptions, except for the book of Psalms. Although the manuscript chosen as a basic text does not exist in the original Northern dialect, it has sufficient authority to restore many of the lost or corrupt readings to date, and its inclusion in two out-of-law texts indicates that this text should now be re-evaluated.

This study extends to H. E.

Allen's research on Roll manuscripts, discusses their relationships, and examines text transmission methods. In the notes, many of the potential source material for Rolle are cited, and the edition concludes with a short list..
