It is important to include Tuber and Root Crops in the Plant Breeding Guide. The staple staple crops, which are increasingly important for global food security and poverty alleviation, are the important Millennium Goals of the United Nations.

In fact, 2008 was the United Nations Year of the Potato in recognition of the role that potatoes play as the third most important food crop in the world after wheat and rice. Other major foodstuffs are cassava, sweet potato and yam.

Together, they occupy about 50 million hectares, with production of 640 million metric tons, of which 70 per cent are in developing countries. In total, there are more than 30 varieties of growing root and growing crops in the world today.

Given the content of other folders in the series, it makes sense to include sugar and beet feed. Swedish and turnips.

Like other parts of the series, this report will provide information on the latest developments in applied plant breeding using current developments in this area, from the efficient use of genetic resources to the impact of biotechnology in plant breeding.
