Systems Thinking, Systems Practice synopsis

Thinking Systems, Systems Practice "Whether it is design, coincidence, or mere synchronization, it seems that Checkland has developed the writing of seminal publications near the beginning of each decade, which sets the basis and framework for systematic system research in that decade." Thirty years ago, Peter Schutland began to test whether the engineering systems approach (SE), which had been a major success in technical problems, could be used by managers who deal with the intricacies of regulatory life. The direct conversion of SE to the broader management situations was not possible, but by insisting on a set of thought systems closely related to practice, Checkland and his collaborators developed an alternative approach - soft system methodology (SSM) - which enables managers of all types and at any level To deal with the thoughts and confusion of the positions they face.

This work has created the distinction now accepted between the thinking of rigid systems, in which parts of the world are considered as a system that can be an engineer, and Softa systems think of focusing on making sure that the investigation process is real - the complexity of the world is itself a learning system. Systems Thinking and Systems Practice (1981) and the Soft Work Systems (1990) Methodology with a previous paper on a system-based approach to solving real world problems (1972) were considered classic in this field.

Now Peter Checkland looked back over the three decades to develop SSM, bringing his account to date, and reflected on the entire evolutionary process that produced mature SSM. SSM: A 30-year retrospective, here in thought systems, practice systems close a chapter on what is undoubtedly the single most important research program on the use of system ideas to solve the problem.

Now retired from full-time university work, Peter Checkland continues his research as an honorary Leverhulme colleague.
