The Birds of Ghana synopsis

This is the second account of the Ghanaian Birds (formerly Gold Coast), the first report published by Graemes in 1987. It provides detailed information on about 750 known species (150 of which are Eurasian and North American migrants, of which more than 100 are domestic).

The intensive fieldwork undertaken by authors, after increasing the contribution of visiting or resident natural scientists, means that maps (for all species except the homeless) provide a clear picture of distribution in this country of about 240,000 square kilometers. The text complements the maps, with a synthesis of what is known of ecology, status, movements, breeding seasons, concerns of classification and maintenance.

Nearly 600 published references are cited, details about the ring of retrievals and a dictionary of more than 860 local locations. In 116 pages, introductory chapters cover vegetation, major bird habitats, biogeography, migration, conservation and the history of the prospecting of birds in Ghana. The chapter on conservation draws attention to the great pressure exerted by human activities (including deforestation, seabream and overfishing) on the environment and wildlife.

Six species of birds have been extinct in Ghana in the last century, and many other species have become severely threatened. Forty-nine types of conservation are considered global or regional, and the importance of the country's protected areas is emphasized, as forest reserves and other natural habitats are destroyed at an alarming rate.

Twenty-one pages of colored images illustrate Ghana's habitats as well as a selection of typical bird species. There is no endemic bird in Ghana alone, but the country contains at least 179 species of Congolese Guinean forests, including all endemic species in Upper Guinea (Ghana in the west), and Ghana is the only country where there is a Pictart or Rockfowl By all bird visitors..
