A History of Cambridge University Press synopsis
This second volume of the history of Cambridge University Press deals with a period of fundamental changes in printing, publishing and sales. This book is not only about the history of the history of the press but also in the context of this change: to examine how trade forces collided with hopes or requests for scholarships and education, and how, in the end, one was made to exploit the other.
The volume opens with new arrangements developed by the University for Printing in Cambridge in 1690, and closes on the eve of the opening of new premises in London. In the early years, the leader was Richard Bentley, whose controversial role in journalism was crucial to his wealth.
As always, the success of the press depended on London and the book trade in London. This book explores the changing nature of this relationship, and to what extent the University Press is also an international publisher..
