A History of the University of Cambridge A History of the University of Cambridge synopsis

This is the fourth volume of the history of Cambridge University and explores the extraordinary growth in the size and academic standing of the university between 1870 and 1990. Although the University has made great progress since the 1870s, when it was seen as a provincial religious school and also the home of tradition: Colleges, one more than 700 years old, one of the seventies.

This book seeks to penetrate the nature of colleges and the Union. And show how the university's colleges and departments compete with colleges for this dominant role.

It's an attempt to uncover a wonderful institutional story for the university community and its place in the world. It explores deeply the themes of religion and learning, and women's entry into the male environment.

There are portraits of prominent and distinctive figures in the Cambridge scene, and there is a drawing - eclectic but inevitably extensive - for many disciplines, a broad study of intellectual and academic history.
