A Practical Guide to the Science and Practice of Afterschool Programming synopsis

The aim of this volume is to bridge the gap between scientific research in after-school programming and the practices that occur in these settings. Both sources of knowledge are important for developing the after-school workforce ability to provide high-quality programming. On the one hand, this means that after-school staff should not work with young people until they are adequately prepared, which includes training in evidence-based practices and appropriate supervision.

On the other hand, this requires that scientists understand and study those aspects of after-school programs that are most relevant to the needs of practitioners. This volume includes perspectives from the after-school workforce, scientists discussing current research, and practitioners who know how after-school programs work in practice. This is volume 144 of the New Guidelines for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass Quarterly Report series devoted to bringing together all those interested in helping young people, including scholars, practitioners and people from different disciplines and professions..
