It is hoped that this approach will pave the way for a better understanding of what should be the appropriate and useful ecological assessment of contaminated sites. It shows that in most cases, current practices do not provide for ecological risk assessment. Furthermore, the pursuit of ecological risk assessment is in fact an unnecessary undertaking in traditional hazardous waste sites. (For example, the concept of scale is often overlooked by practitioners, and questions why animals such as deer are routinely assessed on 5-acre sites and defies currently used eco-toxicological data.)
