Antonio Candido synopsis

Here Howard Baker provides an English-speaking audience with a series of provocative acts by Antonio Candido, a senior message man in Brazil. Candido is taught as a sociologist, literature is viewed as a social project, and he is equally at home in textual analysis, literary theory debates, social argument, anthropological, and historical.

It would be impossible to exaggerate his influence on the intellectual life of his country, and on Latin American researchers who can read Portuguese, but knows little about the rest of the world. In literature, women, and cultural studies, as well as in sociology, this book contributes to an evolving and unfamiliar perspective that would dazzle readers who are not familiar with Candido's work.

With emphasis on Candido's extensive interests, the articles include articles on European literature (Dumas, Conrad, Kafka, and Kafavi, for example), Brazilian literature (Machado de Assis and others), Brazilian cultural life and politics, and general problems. Of criticism (relations between sociology and criticism, and the problem of literature in underdeveloped countries).

It is important to be a long piece on Teresina Carini Rocchi, an Italian immigrant to Brazil, who was a lifelong socialist. Originally published in 1995.
