Art and Multitude synopsis
Nine letters on art, written to friends of exile in France in the 1980s. Starting with previous physical approaches to art, Negri relates artistic production to the distinctive social production structures of each historical era.
This enables him to determine the nature of both material and artistic production in the postmodern and post-Fordian era - a time that Negri defines as immaterial. Then Negri seeks to define artistic beauty in this new era, and this is what he does in terms of concepts that have become essential in his thinking - uniqueness, the public, abstraction, teamwork, the event, the biological, and the common.
Art is a living action, thus the invention of individuality, of unique characters and objects. But this transgression only achieves beauty when the signs and language through which they express themselves are transformed into a society when they are contained within a joint venture.
Gemayel is not an act of imagination, but a fantasy has become a work. Art, in this sense, is abundance..
