In this research for immigrant children in New York and London, Natasha Kumar and Areko ask, is there a link between the culture of young people affected by rap / hip hop and motivation to succeed in school? Warikoo challenges teachers, administrators and parents to look at the external manifestations of youth culture - clothing, music and harsh conversation - to better understand the internal struggle many minority students face while trying to reconcile with their peers while working to lay the foundation for a successful lifeUsing ethnographic and exploratory data and interviews at two ethnically diverse and low-level schools, Warikoo analyzes seemingly contradictory patterns and tastes in music and school behavior and finds that most teens try to balance successful success with peers and success at school.
