Becoming a Revolutionary synopsis

Here Timothy Tuckt examines some of the various interpretations of the origins of the French Revolution by examining the psychological tracks of the individuals who launched them - the deputies of the General Assembly and the National Assembly. Based on a wide range of sources, particularly letters and memoirs of more than 100 deputies, the book assesses their collective journeys and their cultural and political experience before and after 1789.

Faced with the current "reactionary" dogma, the members of the Third Real Estate argue strongly about the nobility of wealth, status and culture. Almost all MPs were familiar with some elements of the Enlightenment, yet little evidence could be found before an ideological "revolution" or coherent "speech". Apart from the inexperienced ideologues portrayed by the revisionists, the Third Area deputies appear as practical men, more attractive to law, history, and science than abstract philosophy.

As far as advance instructions were given for broad reform, it was less than reading books than participating in municipal and regional politics and the same royal procedures and decrees. Prior to their arrival in Versailles, a few deputies perceived changes that could be considered "revolutionary." These new ideas first appeared in the process of the Assembly itself and continued to evolve, in many cases, throughout the first year of the Revolution.
