Biodiversity Loss synopsis

This volume describes the main results of the Beijer Biodiversity Program of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The program brought together a number of eminent ecologists and economists to consider the nature and importance of the biodiversity problem.

In promoting collaborative action among these closely related disciplines sought to shed new light on the concept of diversity. Impacts of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning; drivers of biodiversity loss; and options for enhancing biodiversity conservation.

The results of the program are surprising. The essence of the biodiversity problem is the loss of ecosystem resilience and the insurance it provides against the uncertain environmental impacts of economic and population growth.

This is a local problem as much as a global problem, which means that the conservation of biological diversity provides local as well as global benefits. Solutions as well as causes of biodiversity loss are incentives for local users..
