Cambridge Studies in Biological and Evolutionary Anthropology synopsis

As a group, Western diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, allergies and mental health problems are one of the major problems facing people at the beginning of the 21st century, especially as they extend to poor countries. The evolutionary perspective has much to offer standard medical biopsies of Western diseases. At the heart of this approach is the idea that human evolution occurred in very different circumstances from the modern rich Western environment, and as a result, human biology is not adapted to the contemporary Western environment.

Entered by an anthropological perspective and aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying courses in ecology and disease development, Tessa Pollard applies this evolutionary perspective and expands it by analyzing trends in Western disease rates and providing a new synthesis of current understanding of evolutionary processes, biology and epidemiology.
