Coaching for Performance synopsis
This book celebrates two important aspects of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. (1) For participants in any aspect of the Olympiad, especially coaches and athletes, London 2012 was all about achieving dreams, achieving success and participating in competitive sport at the highest level.
This book identifies some of these dreams and the role coaches play in this. (2) The book also examines the concept of "coaching for performance" and does so from an international and multi-sport perspective.
From interviews with Olympic coaches, the experiences of those working in the field of high performance and of applied sports researchers, the book uses the metaphor of the `` alchemist coach '' in order to capture the dynamics of the relationships between coach, athlete, and performance.Sports such as diving, swimming, gymnastics and skiing are included, as are individual and team sports. The book is set in the context of elite sport, high performance, and coaching. Its contents highlight two important types of reflexive practice: (a) reflection versus action (a) reflection versus action.
Presentation style includes narration, reflective conversations, ethnographic work, analysis of interviews and videos available online. This book has been published as a special issue of Contemplative Practice..
