Contemporary Psychological Research on Social Dilemmas synopsis

The social dilemma is a situation in which the interests of the group and its members collide. In these situations, individuals often tend to take action in favor of (sometimes maximizing) their selfish interests in the short term.

But if all members of the group adopt such behaviors, the group suffers because all its members are worse off than they can be by supporting alternative pro-social actions that prefer (at times maximizing) the collective interest. This book provides an overview and summary of the state of psycho-social research on social dilemmas. It is organized around four key issues: individual differences that define people's preferences for outcomes that enhance either their well-being or the well-being of their group; the study of dynamic processes based on simulation of artificial societies; social dilemmas that arise in inter-group conflicts.

And the impact of different types and sources of uncertainty on behavior in situations of social dilemmas.
