The social dilemma is a situation in which the interests of the group and its members collide. In these situations, individuals often tend to take action in favor of (sometimes maximizing) their selfish interests in the short term.
But if all members of the group adopt such behaviors, the group suffers because all its members are worse off than they can be by supporting alternative pro-social actions that prefer (at times maximizing) the collective interest.
