Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensing synopsis

Nuclear techniques and related technologies can help to develop smart agricultural climate practices by improving water use efficiency. Measurement of soil water content is necessary to improve the use of this resource in agriculture.

However, most sensors observe small areas (less than 1 meter in radius), so a large number of sensors are needed to obtain soil water content across a large area. This can be costly and labor intensive, so larger measuring devices should be used as an alternative to traditional soil moisture sensor techniques.

The cosmic neutron sensor (CRNS) is a device that monitors water content in the soil in a non-invasive and continuous manner. This publication provides background information on this new technique and explains in detail the calibration and validation process..
