Energy for sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific synopsis

With demand for energy in Asia and the Pacific increasing by 60 per cent from 2010 to 2035, access to reliable and sufficient energy services will remain the focus for decades to come. Countries in the region need to maximize their potential, improve access to energy, increase renewable energy quotas, enhance energy efficiency and enhance cooperation in energy security and connectivity.

The 2016 Regional Trends Report on Energy for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific supports the implementation of Goal 7 of the Sustainable Development Goals and the results of the 2013 Asia-Pacific Energy Forum. The 2016 edition follows a similar process for the 2015 report: consultation with the member of the Committee The selection of the topic, the compilation and review of the case study; discussion with experts on thematic areas; and the participation of consultants in specific research.

The Regional Trends Report 2016 consists of two parts. Part I (Chapter 2) provides an overview of the implementation of the 15 work areas, which will contribute to the implementation of the mid-term review of the APEF 2013 results and the preparation of the second APEF, to be held in Tonga in 2018.

Part II (Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6) ) Discusses emerging energy issues in the global and Asia-Pacific markets and two topics previously selected by ESCAP member States: (a) trade in transboundary energy to increase the sustainability of the energy sector and regional interdependence; and (b) Develop effective policies to expand access to energy services.
