Enlightenment in Conflict is the first comprehensive study of the revival of Buddhist Chan in China in the 17th century. Focusing on the evolution of a series of differences about Enlightenment Chan, Jiang describes Wu's process by which Chan re-emerged as the most prominent Buddhist institution of the time.
Looking at the development of Chadian Buddhism in the seventeenth century, focusing on differences involving issues such as proper practice and descent lines. In this way, it shows how Chan's revival reshaped Chinese Buddhism in the late Chinese Empire.
When these differences are put together with the major events in the Ming-Qing epochal transition, Wu shows how the rise and fall of Buddhist Chan is conditioned by social changes in the 17th century.
