Environmental Transformations synopsis

From the depths of the oceans to the highest atmospheric ranges, the human impact on the environment is important and undeniable. These forms of global and local environmental change together seem to indicate the arrival of a new geological era: Anthropocene. This geological age is determined not by natural environmental fluctuations or by meteorological effects, but by collective actions of mankind.

Environmental transformations provide a brief and accessible introduction to human practices and systems that preserve anthroposine. It combines carbon cycle calculations, global thermometers, entropy, hydrology, forest ecology and biology with theories of demography, war, industrial capitalism, urban development, state theory and behavioral psychology.

This book draws on the special role of geography and geographers in the study of environmental change and its human engines. It provides a review of critical theories that can help to uncover the social, economic and political factors that influence environmental change.

It also explores key issues in contemporary environmental studies, such as resource use, water scarcity, climate change, industrial pollution and deforestation. These issues are "mapped" through a series of geographical case studies to illustrate the specific value of geographical concepts of space, location and size in revealing the complex nature of environmental change in different social, economic, political and cultural contexts.

Finally, the book addresses the different ways in which countries, communities and individuals around the world adapt to environmental change in the twenty-first century. Special attention is given to the uneven geographical opportunities that different societies have to adapt to the changing environment and social justice issues raised by this situation.

This book encourages students to share the scientific uncertainties surrounding the study of environmental change, while also discussing the pessimistic and more optimistic views on humanity's ability to meet the environmental challenges of our time.
