Ethics and Future Generations synopsis

The present humans stand in a unique relationship of unequal impact on future generations. Our choices now can settle whether there is any human being in the additional future; how much will be found; what capacities and capabilities they may have; and what the nature of the natural world they inhabitThis volume, with contributions from both new voices and eminent personalities and rooted in moral and political philosophy, examines three generally unexplored themes of ethics and our relationship with future generations. First, would it be morally wrong to allow humanity to extinction? Or do we have moral reasons to try to ensure humanity's continuity in the indefinite future? Secondly, if humanity is to continue in the future, how many people should be? Is it morally important whether they have a quality life or are they hardly worth living? And thirdly, how can we best understand the intuitive notion that, by not taking action on climate change and conserving natural resources, we are somehow wrong in future generations? This book was originally published as a special issue in the Canadian Journal of Philosophy.
