Every Day Lasts a Year synopsis
Writer Richard S. Hollander was devastated when his parents were killed in a car accident in 1986.
As he searched their house, he discovered letters from a family he had never known - his mother, his three sisters, their husbands and their children. The letters, which were stacked neatly in a briefcase, were written from Krakow, Poland, between 1939 and 1942.
They depict daily life under the most intense pain and tension. At the same time, Richard's father, Joseph Hollander, was fighting the US government to avoid deportation and death.
Richard was surprised to learn that his father saved the lives of many Polish Jews, but - despite heroic efforts - he was unable to save his family.
