Feeding India synopsis

Food security is one of the major global challenges of the twenty-first century, and the lessons learned from India are of particular importance throughout the world. India accounts for about a quarter of the world's undernourished people, but it also provides a worrying situation about the extent to which rapid economic growth is unable to provide a panacea for food security.

This book takes on this challenge. He explains how the problem of chronic food security in India is a function of the distinctive interaction between economic, political and environmental processes.

It stresses that undernourishment and hunger are two backward elements of human development in India precisely because the interaction between these aspects of the food security problem has not been adequately understood in policy-making societies. Only through an integrative approach covering social and environmental sciences, are the fullest dimensions of this problem uncovered.

A good understanding of the problem is required based on FAO's perception of food security as including availability, access (distribution) and utilization (food content), as well as Amartya Sen's ideas on benefits and capacities.
