This strange story in the 19th century culminates in the depiction of anorexia nervosa, a case that has since attracted a wide range of theories, interpretations and literature that transform its medical curiosity into a modern disease.

In the history of psyhiatry this is a wonderful account, of great clinical historical significance, which will interest anyone with the interaction between culture and the individual. Walter Vandereycken, an international authority on research and treatment of eating disorders, is professor of psychiatry at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.
