Over the centuries, self-starvation has taken on many frightening manifestations - in the extreme religious fasts and abstinence from the saints. In a hunger strike at the gallery presenting skeletons and artists of hunger; in the fate of melancholica, hystericsm possessed and charmed. This strange story in the 19th century culminates in the depiction of anorexia nervosa, a case that has since attracted a wide range of theories, interpretations and literature that transform its medical curiosity into a modern disease.
