From the Factory to the Metropolis synopsis

This second volume of a new three-part series of Antonio Negri's work focuses on the consequences of the rapid process of industrialization that has taken place throughout the West in recent years. In this volume we are looking exactly at what happens when industrial industrial classes are laid off and factories closed.

Obviously, capital continues to reap profits, but how and where? According to Negri, the creation of value extends beyond the walls of the factory to embrace the whole society; the "collective factor" in industry gives way to the "operio sociale" and the land of exploitation becomes the whole of human life. In the postmodern era, the city becomes the hallmark of value.

We must therefore understand the cosmopolitan city, with its layers, annexes and resistors. The old categories of the private sector and the public are insufficient to describe the new matrix of production, which is characterized as "common", and the productive space of cognitive and intangible employment.

The city of today can be defined as a space of hostility between the forms of life it produces, on the one hand, financial capital (the capital that works on rents), and on the other by the "cognitive proletariat". The main question is how to mobilize the "joint" of the latter to destroy capitalism.

In an analysis from the Italian work operaismo in the 1970s to the present, the plant from the city provides readers with valuable insight into the long-term impact of industrial liberalization, which presents both challenges and opportunities. It will attract the interest of many interested in the ongoing development of the Negri project and anyone interested in radical politics today..
