Geopolitics synopsis

It has become increasingly impossible to think of our changing world without understanding the term "geopolitics". Following the invasion and occupation of Iraq by the United States, the United Kingdom, and others, geopolitics were presented as an explanation for the failure of the occupation to reinvent the Iraqi state and as a blueprint for future action. But what is "geopolitics"? Drawing on academic and political material, this book introduces readers to the concept of geopolitics, from the first use of the term to modern re-thinking.

The concept of geopolitics is presented through four thematic sections - geopolitics, empire, geopolitics of the Cold War, geopolitics after the Cold War and re-conceptualization of geopolitics. Each section includes major writings from a variety of diverse and leading authors such as Said, Agnew, Dalby, Toothill, Gregory, Barnett and Kaplan, accompanied by a critical introduction by editors to guide the reader through materials. This reader establishes the foundations of geopolitics at a time when readers present the continuing importance of the concept in the 21st century.

This Reader provides a basic resource that exposes students to native writing. Editors provide a course through the material using section introductions to help readers understand the context of the material and the effects of the writing.

The readings included a group of authors, writing from a range of sites. The reader concludes with the latest changes in geopolitical thinking, integrating feminist and other perspectives..
