Historical Tradition in the Fourth Gospel synopsis

It is difficult to distinguish between history and interpretation in all the Gospels, and perhaps the most difficult in the Fourth Gospel. In his sequel to the interpretation of the Fourth Gospel, Dr. Dodd, with the historical question in mind, tries to discover the special dynasty of common traditions in which the author's work is unknown.

This detailed study of the Gospel of St. John falls into two parts.

In the first, Dodd examines the material of the novel - the emotional narratives, the ministry and chapters on John the Baptist and the early disciples - and in the second he performs a detailed examination of the hadiths. In contrast to the theories that confirm the adoption of the Fourth Gospel over one or more of the Synoptic Gospels, Dr Dodd is gathering a collection of evidence to prove that an ancient tradition independent of the Synoptic Gospels deserves serious study as a contribution to our knowledge of historical facts about Christ.

This critical and historical investigation of the most important books and their origin is complemented by Dr. Dodd's study of the Fourth Gospel. It is convincing in the coherence of its results, as well as the absorption of interest in its work.

It was welcomed by all students of Christian origin as an important addition to our understanding of early traditions about Jesus, and of course this Gospel.
