'I Wish I Had Your Wings' synopsis
In August 1942, the British launched Operation Pedestal in an attempt to deliver supplies to the devastated island of Malta, the Allied base that had been under siege for several months. From 9 to 15 August, a convoy of about 50 ships operated Axis bomber launchers, submarines, electronic boats and minefields.
Of the 14 original merchant ships, only five reached Malta Grand Harbor. In The Spitfire Pilot and Sea Captain, Angus Mansfield connects the experiences of two men involved in Pedestal, Captain David Macfarlane of MV Melbourne Star and his nephew David Mejor, one of the Spitfire pilots who fought to protect the convoy.
This is the story of a family's contribution to relief operations that cost more than 400 Allied people, but has been recorded in history as one of Britain's most important strategic victories in World War II. ..
