Internationalizing the History of American Art Views synopsis
American art history is a wonderful but fast growing young system. Membership in the American Art Historians Association, founded in 1979, now has nearly 600 members.
As a result of this growth, geographical and cultural boundaries no longer contain the field. The history of American art has become "international", represented by scholars and fairs around the world.
Although this international exchange of ideas and exchange will prove to be valuable, it is left without thinking. The internationalization of the history of American art begins with a critical study of this exchange, to show how it has become part of the maturity of American art history. In this volume, a group of eminent scholars is the formulation and dissemination of the history of American art locally and internationally, past and present, theoretically and practically, from a variety of attitudes and intellectual experiences.
To do so, they rely on literature which, collectively, constitutes a bibliography of the future of this field. Three sections - "American Art and Art History", "Exhibition and Exhibition" and "Post-1945 Investments" - provide the structure in which contributors examine the current narrative framework of the history of American art.
This examination points to the direction of the field and the future history formed through international dialogue.
