Just Wars, Holy Wars, and Jihads synopsis

The only wars, holy wars and jihad explore the evolution of legitimate or morally legitimate war ideas in Western and Islamic civilizations. Historically, these ideas have been grouped under three signs: war, holy war, and jihad.

A large collection of literature explores the development of concepts of just war, holy war in the West, and jihad in Islam. However, no book has so far investigated deeply the historical interaction between Western concepts of just or holy war and Islamic definitions of jihad.

This book is a major contribution to the comparative study of the ethics of war and peace in the West and Islam. The twentieth chapter examines two broad questions: 1.

What is the historical evidence that the Christian and Jewish writers about the just war, holy war, and Muslim writers on jihad knew other traditions? 2. What is the evidence in theses, stories, speeches, songs, and other historical records, or in practice, that any tradition has an impact on the other? The book reviews the period from the rise of Islam in the early seventh century to the present day.

The first part reviews the influence of early Islamic conquests on Byzantine, Syriac, and Muslim thinking in a justified war. Part II explores developments during the Crusades.

The third part focuses on the early modern period in Europe and the Ottoman Empire, followed by the analysis of the era of European imperialism in Part IV. Part V presents the discussion in the current period.

The chapters analyze the impact of international law and terrorism on the concepts of just war and jihad.
