The land of the cosmic race is a rich ethnographic description of the strong role played by race and color in organizing the lives and thoughts of ordinary Mexicans. It presents an unprecedented story of how individuals in contemporary urban Mexico build their identities, attitudes and practices in the context of the prevailing national belief system.
The book revolves around the participation of Mexicans with three pillars of racism in Mexico's national ideology - the promotion of the race mix, the assertion of the absence of racism in the country, and the marginalization of blackness in Mexico. The themes of this book are intractable characters - people of mixed race in Mexico who are of original origin, African, European and the intended consumers of this national ideology. The Global Race Ground explains how Mexican immigrants penetrate the sea of contradictions that arise when their daily experiences contradict the national situation and how they manage these contradictions in a way that preserves, protects and reproduces national ideology.
