Legends of the Northern Paiute synopsis

The Legends share the northern Paiutes and preserve 21 original Northern Myths that have not been published before, as Wilson and Yue, the spiritual leader and oral historian of Warm Springs Paiutes. These legends were told about the fires of the Bayot camps and the villages during the "storytelling season" in winter in the Great Basin of the American West.

The Paiute communities were shared as a means of passing tribal visions of "animal people" and "humans", their origins and values, their spiritual and natural environment, their culture and their daily lives. The legends in this volume are recorded, copied, reviewed and edited by Wilson, Youa and James Gardner.

Each legend was recorded, then read and edited aloud, to respect the creativity, warmth and flow of Paiute storytelling. The stories selected include familiar characters from local legends, such as Coyote, as well as unique creations in the northern Paiacles, like the creature at the top of Smith Rock, now known as Monkey Face, but known to Paiutes in the middle of the state Oregon as Nuwuzoho cannibals.

Waiwa's training for North Paiute culture began when he was 14 years old. These legends were passed to him by his grandmother and other tribal sheikhs.

It is now available to future generations of tribal members, students, researchers and readers interested in the original and new Waiwa voice. It is best to read and appreciate these legends as they were told aloud and shared with others and delivered with all the vitality, rhythm, creativity and humor of the original storytellers of Paiute on those cold cold winter nights in the high desert..
