Ivan Turgenev, one of the greatest Russian writers, was the first to achieve real fame outside his country. He spent most of his life in Western Europe and began writing letters, not only to keep his friends informed of his progress, but "to receive responses." A rare and pleasant reporter, rarely objected to the publication of his letters, written with this possibility.
This full-letter selection extends over fifty years, from 1831 until Turgenev's death in September 1883. Turgenev enjoyed conversations by mail and discussed social, political, literary, artistic and musical issues.
Among his prominent book correspondents of that day (including Flaubert, Zola, Mopasant, Europe.
, Tolstoy and Dostoevsky) as well as friends and relationships. Many letters reveal his views on contemporary literary and social events in Russia andOthers, to its publishers and translators and aspiring authors, give some of its standards to the author. These characters will not provide an answer to Turgenev's mystery, but they show many aspects of this wonderful and mercurial man.
