Madness in International Relations synopsis

Madness in international relations offers an important and innovative presentation of the role of psychology and psychiatry in global politics and shows how mental health management has become a means of securing different populations, often with dubious effects. By analyzing three major case studies, Howell demonstrates how these interventions can sometimes be coercive, sovereign, and at other disciplinary times, and at other good times, if not benign.

In each case, a "diagnostic contest" is followed, ie, an appeal about the best way to diagnose and treat the populations concerned. The book examines the residents of Guantánamo Bay, post-conflict societies and Western armies, and determines how these diagnostic contests are ultimately based on common assumptions about the value of psychology and psychiatry in global security management about the value of security through mental health management, Medical Security. This work will be of great importance to all scholars of international relations, critical theory and security studies..
