Mass Media, Consumerism and National Identity in Postwar Japan synopsis

Mass media, consumerism and national identity in postwar Japanese Japan address Japan's evolving nationalism and national identity with regard to its new consumer growth during the two decades 1952 to 1972, through a study of the transformation of print media and the market for weekly and monthly magazines. Martin Smith argues that the transformation of print media in the 1950s and 1960s expanded the potential of social, individual and national identities in Japan. Since the late 1950s, the growth of the weekly magazine market has been driven by the enormous potential of advertising revenue, the rapid development of the Japanese economy and the need for a consumer society to grow.

This has led to the integration of national identity with the individual self - described by this book as "national self" - where the Japanese media encouraged individual consumption to help the Japanese nation as a whole recover. In addition to news magazines such as Mainichi Graph and Asahi Graph, youth magazines - Shukan Hippon and Heibon Punch - Smith - show how the relationship between nationalism and everyday life is better understood than life Taking into account the changing nature of consumption in this period.

By offering an alternative to the traditional top-down narrative of state-driven economic nationalism, this book offers a unique contribution to the study of Japanese history after the war and Japanese nationalism.
