Modern Women and Parisian Consumer Culture in Impressionist Painting synopsis
This book examines the encounter between impressionist painting and consumer culture in the 19th century. Ruth Eskin explores the representation of women's fashion, consumerism and sales of women in Parisian stores.
It reflects our understanding of the representation of women in impressionist painting by refocusing gender exploration, from excluding women from public places of modernity to engaging them; from male privilege to a range of perspectives that include women. Iskin also analyzes how women's paintings represent spaces of presentation, and how women treat spectators in active roles - as consumers, producers or sellers - in a variety of locations, such as the hats boutique, the theater, the opera, the cafe ceremony and the market process. Given a wide range of sources of literature and visual culture in the 19th century, Iskin restores the painting of Impressionism in the context of the culture of consumption..
