National Conflict in Czechoslovakia synopsis

The Czechoslovak internal politics, including the long-term policy dilemmas of the so-called Slovak question, are usually treated from a historical point of view. Here Carole Lev sees this issue from a new analytical perspective.

Slovakia's dissatisfaction with their status in the constitutional system struck Czechoslovakia from the beginning of the country after the First World War. The large Slovak minority (now one-third of the population) has repeatedly complicated the state's struggle for self-identification, stability and even survival.

Professor Leif sets up a regular analytical framework to discuss Czech-Slovak relations and how they have been affected and influenced by the power of the state and the political system. History of Czechoslovakia is actually a museum of major European political alternatives in the twentieth century, and this book is an experiment in the application of the comparative approach to political science not on transnational studies but to analyze one country over time.

The author organizes consideration of policy-making on the Slovak national question on three components and their impact on effective problem solving: the institutional structure of the pre-Munich republic and post-war socialist state, leadership values and buildings related to the disposition of national question, and patterns of Czech and Slovak leadership interaction. Originally published in 1988.
