National Differences, Global Similarities synopsis
Using American schools as a reference point, this book provides a comprehensive and comparative description of the study as a global institution. Each chapter develops a story of a particular global trend: the persistence of gender differences in achievement, new ways for nations to control their schools, the rapid expansion of private tutoring, school violence, the development of effective curricula, the daily work of teachers, among others.
The authors rely on a four-year investigation in 47 countries that have studied many aspects of school education in basic education, such as how to run schools, teach teachers, and what students learn in mathematics and science. Baker and Leitner present the results of the study in a non-technical and easily accessible way, with an explanation of the current trends in both education policy discussions and theoretical explorations of the role of education in society.
Work is being done throughout the book to discuss how global educational trends and the forces behind them will change and shape possible directions for future education.
