New Perspectives in Music History and Criticism synopsis

Schoenberg and Redemption offer a new way to understand Schoenberg's move toward penance in 1908. Reconsidering his threshold and early works, in addition to his theoretical writings and a collection of previously unexplored archival documents, Jolie Brown argues that the revolutionary Schoenberg step was in part in response to Wagner's negative accusations On Jewish influence on German music. In 1898, especially the Jewish identity of 1908, Schoenberg came into conflict with his commitment to Wagner's modernism to provide motivation for his radical innovations.

While acknowledging the wider Vienna context of the 20th century, Brown draws particular attention to the continuity between Schoenberg's work and the work of the Viennese moral philosopher Otto Feininger, himself a Wagnerian ideologue. It is also considered the afterlife of the author's ideological position, when the concept of replacing German culture with its Jewish elements in the late 1920s and early 1930s took a very different turn..
