Nicholas Biddle in Greece synopsis

Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) was a prominent politician and financier in the early 19th century in America. At the age of 18, he went to Europe as minister to the French minister.

He also identified James Monroe when Monroe was the US ambassador to London. He was later elected to the legislative state and Senate of Pennsylvania.

Eventually he became director and then head of the US bank. During a trip to Europe, he sailed instead of Greece, then part of the Ottoman Empire.

Half the newspaper that was kept on the trip was discovered only recently, and the other half is known to a few people because it is still in the hands of the private sector. Taken together, these two memos (in addition to the four letters written by Biddle to his family in Philadelphia) are the information mine on the formative influences on his career, on politics and personalities in Europe and Napoleon, on the state of Greece and the ancient ruins under Turkocratia, Berber.

Although written twenty years ago, these magazines are fascinating for their literary quality and overall vitality. Perhaps because they did not write to be published, they have freshness and honesty lacks more formal travel business.

McNeal's extensive introduction illuminates the early nineteenth-century background of Biddle magazines.
