On Cold Mountain synopsis

In this first serious study of Hunshan ("The Cold Mountain"), Paul Roser discusses some of the 70 poems of the famous Chinese poet who lived during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Hanshan's poems gained a large number of readers in English-speaking countries after the publication of the novel The Dharma Bums (1958) and Gary Snyder's translations (which began to appear in the same year) and translated into English more than any other body of the Chinese verse.

Roiser investigates how Buddhism defines the way in which modern Hanshan believers may read. He proposes poeticism as a counter-model to the Confucian assumptions of Chinese literary thought and examines how texts written by Kerouac, Snyder and Jane Hirschfield respond to Buddhist traditions in East Asia..
