Place, Identity, and National Imagination in Post synopsis
In the struggles for political and cultural dominance in Taiwan since the 1980s, the central point in narration and the main battleground in political debates is primarily spatial and space-based. It seems that the main fault line is a split between the identity of a hypothesis that emphasizes the cultural origin (China) and the emphasis on restoring the identity of the "local" place (Taiwan). The place, identity and national imagination of Taiwan post-war issue of Taiwan's permanent identity is explored from a spatial perspective, focuses on the importance, the relationship between the composition of the state and the formation of identity. After taking post-war Taiwan as a case study, the book examines the ways in which the Kuomintang regime has gained control over its political control, added to the island's geographical boundaries and created a national geography.
By doing so, he examines how, why, and to what extent power is exercised through the process of making the place, and considers the relationship between the official versions of "ROC Geography" and the perceptions of "turning island" into "nation". On the other hand, by addressing the relationship between the state and the imagined societies, B-Yu Chang establishes a dialogue between place and cultural identity to analyze the continuous change and the formation of Chinese and Taiwanese identity. With a variety of case studies including mapping development, geography education, regional advertising and urban planning, this multidisciplinary book will have a broad appeal across Taiwan studies, geography, cultural studies, history and politics..
