Pogroms Anti synopsis

Three large waves of anti-Jewish riots swept through southern Russia and Poland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this book, prominent scholars in Russian Jewish history explore the origins and nature of these massacres, which were among the most widespread of antisemitic violence before the Holocaust.

Using new methods to study Russian history, contributors are studying every wave of violence in turn. They see the role of violence in Russian society.

Prejudices and stereotypes and psychology of both the educated community and the rural masses; the work of the tsarist regime, especially the police and army as agents of the regime and control; the impact of the massacres on the sense of Jewish identity and security in the empire. In his conclusion, Hans Roger compares these riots with both massacres elsewhere in Europe and anti-punishment violence in the United States during the same period..
