Public Drinking and Popular Culture in Eighteenth synopsis

In addition to a new dimension to the history of the rationales and the study of popular culture, Thomas Brennan reinterprets the culture of the working classes in the old order in Paris through the drinking rites in the neighboring pubs. It challenges the traditional portrayal of low-class immorality and offers a reassessment of social commitment.

Using the records of the Paris police, it allows the public to describe their behavior and beliefs. Their testimony places the bar at the center of social presence of working men.

The focus of the study is the struggle of elite and popular culture as expressed in different positions of bars. The elites in bars saw the lack of discipline and vitality they condemned in popular culture.

Public drinking popularity certificate in very different terms. The elaborate rituals surrounding public drinks, their prevalence in social competence and popular entertainment, point to the importance of drinking as a means of social exchange rather than escape from the anesthetic misery, and to the bar as a focal point for male societies.

Professor Brennan explained the logic of both elite and popular systems of meaning and found new dignity and cohesion in the culture and values of the masses. Originally published in 1988.
