Revolution in the House synopsis

To what extent did the French revolution "revolutionize" the French family? When considering the changes in inheritance laws created by the revolution, Margaret Darrow provides a vivid account of the mixed effects of legislation on the families of this period. As a test case, it chose the southern city of Montoban, whose Roman law, which allowed inspectors to appoint their heirs, contradicted new laws that provided for equal inheritance. Filled with vibrant tales, this book shows how the Montoban family of different social classes modified their financial strategies to deal with rapidly changing circumstances and often created solutions that legislators could not imagine.

With family history as its center, a revolution in the home also offers a detailed social history of Montoban during the French Revolution. Their sources are archival, and their argument is based on a statistical study on the creation of family wealth and its non-isolation over several generations. In the 18 th and 19 th centuries, Darrow shows that the transfer of wealth from a lifestyle - at the social, political, religious and economic levels - is not only at the top of society but throughout the social system as a whole.
