Revolutions in the Atlantic World, New Edition synopsis

A New Look at the Controversial Period in the History of the Atlantic In just half a century, the American, French, Haitian and Spanish revolutions transformed the Atlantic world. This book is the first one that analyzes these events through a comparative lens, revealing many key topics in the field of Atlantic history. From the mysterious position of the European empire between the Old and the New World to slavery and diaspora, Wim Cloucester provides an insight into the forces behind many conflicts in the Atlantic world in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. By looking deeply at the structural causes and repressive environments in which these revolutions occurred, Cloucester revealed the common myth that the "people" rebelled against a small ruling elite, arguing instead that the revolutions were civil wars in which all classes were fought on both sides.

The book reveals the extent of popular mobilization mechanisms in the revolutions. For example, although blacks and Indians often played an important role in the success of revolutions, they were never compensated when new regimes rose to power. Nor was democracy a goal or a product of these revolutions, which often produced authoritarian policies.

The new version covers the latest historical trends in the Atlantic world study, including new research on the role of pirates. Drawing on new research - such as primary documents and existing secondary literature - Cloister finally concludes that Enlightenment is the ideological inspiration of the age of revolutions, though not his case..
